An AI career in Nepal means building, training, or applying artificial intelligence systems: chatbots, prediction models, document readers, recommendation engines, and the data pipelines behind them. Most openings sit in Kathmandu and Lalitpur software firms that serve foreign clients, plus a growing number of banks, fintechs and startups. If you are starting from zero, learn Python first, then data handling and machine learning basics, and build two or three projects you can show an employer.
This guide covers the roles available, what they pay, the skills employers list, the degrees now offered by Nepali universities, who is hiring and how to plan your first 12 months. Salary figures and programme details below were checked in October 2026 and link to their sources so you can verify them yourself.
Is AI a Good Career Choice in Nepal?
Yes, for people willing to build real skills, but the market is small and competitive at entry level. Demand is rising because Nepal’s IT export sector is growing and AI work is increasingly part of what foreign clients buy.
Three pieces of evidence point the same way:
- IT exports are growing fast. The Nepal Association for Software and IT Services (NAS-IT) estimates IT service exports crossed USD 1 billion in 2025, more than double the roughly USD 515 million measured in a 2022 IIDS study The Kathmandu Post, Feb 2026.
- The IT workforce is expanding. Industry leaders put sector employment at about 100,000 people, up from more than 70,000 in 2022. Around 90% of these jobs are in Kathmandu, according to the same source.
- AI now has government backing. In August 2025 the Cabinet approved the National AI Policy. It plans a National AI Centre and an AI Regulation Council, and commits to building AI skills from school to university level The Kathmandu Post, Aug 2025.
The honest caveat: most Nepal-based AI job ads we reviewed for this guide asked for three or more years of experience. Freshers usually enter through internships, trainee roles or general software and data jobs, then move into AI work. Plan for that route rather than expecting an AI engineer” title on day one.
Types of AI Jobs Available in Nepal
The most common AI jobs in Nepal are AI engineer, machine learning engineer, data scientist and data engineer. NLP, computer vision and research roles exist but are fewer. The table shows typical work and skills; each employer sets its own requirements, so treat it as a guide, not a checklist.
| AI career | Main responsibilities | Skills often listed | Typical entry route |
| AI Engineer | Builds and integrates AI features such as chatbots, RAG search and agents | Python, LLM APIs, FastAPI, vector databases | Software developer moving into AI |
| Machine Learning Engineer | Trains, deploys and monitors ML models | Python, PyTorch, scikit-learn, MLOps | ML intern or junior data scientist |
| Data Scientist | Analyses data and builds predictive models | SQL, statistics, Python, visualisation | Data analyst or statistics graduate |
| Data Engineer | Builds pipelines and data infrastructure | SQL, databases, Python, Spark | Backend developer |
| NLP Engineer | Works with text, speech and language models | Python, Hugging Face, NLP methods | ML engineer with a language focus |
| Computer Vision Engineer | Builds systems that read images and video | Python, OpenCV, deep learning | ML engineer with an imaging focus |
AI Engineer
AI engineers turn models into working products. Recent Kathmandu listings for this role asked for experience with large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), prompt design, vector databases and REST APIs in FastAPI or Flask Kumarijob, listing expired June 2026. This is currently the fastest route in for developers who already write backend code.
Machine Learning Engineer
ML engineers train models and keep them running in production. A 2026 Fusemachines listing in Kathmandu asked for Python, PyTorch or JAX, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, classical ML methods and MLOps practices, with three or more years of experience at mid-level Nepalijob.
Data Scientist
Data scientists find patterns in data and build forecasting or classification models. Banks, insurers, telecoms and research firms hire for this role. It suits people strong in statistics who enjoy explaining results to non-technical teams.
Data Engineer
Data engineers build the pipelines that feed every AI system. The role is less visible but often easier to enter, because many employers need clean data before they can use AI at all.
NLP Engineer
NLP engineers work on text and speech. In Nepal, this includes Nepali-language tools, which remain under-served. Openings are few, so most people reach this role through general ML work.
Computer Vision Engineer
Computer vision engineers build systems that interpret images and video, such as document scanning, quality inspection or medical imaging. Most such work in Nepal comes through outsourced projects for foreign clients.
AI Researcher
Research roles sit mainly in universities and a small number of labs. They usually require a master’s degree or published work. If research appeals to you, a master’s programme in AI or computer science is the usual path.
AI Consultant
AI consultants help businesses decide where AI fits and how to adopt it. This is a later-career role that combines technical knowledge with domain experience in areas such as banking or healthcare.
AI Trainer
AI trainer covers two different jobs. One is teaching AI courses at colleges or institutes. The other is data annotation and model-evaluation work, often remote, where you label data or rate model outputs. The second is an accessible starting point but is not a substitute for building engineering skills.
AI Engineer Salary in Nepal
Published estimates put entry-level AI and ML engineers in Nepal at roughly NPR 30,000 to 70,000 a month, mid-level at NPR 50,000 to 150,000, and senior engineers above NPR 80,000 to 150,000. The ranges are wide because there is no large, official salary survey for AI roles in Nepal. Most job ads also say “salary not disclosed”.
| Source (date checked: Oct 2026) | Role | Entry level (NPR/month) | Mid level (NPR/month) | Senior (NPR/month) | Method stated |
| Necojobs (Jul 2026) | ML engineer | 30,000–70,000 | 70,000–150,000 (2–5 yrs) | 150,000–250,000+ | None given |
| Kumarijob (Jan 2026) | AI engineer | 30,000–45,000 | 50,000–80,000 | 80,000–120,000+ | None given |
| Paylab | AI engineer | Low: 22,374 | Average: 59,444 | High: 135,960 | Employee questionnaire |
| Payscale (Jul 2026) | ML engineer | Average NPR 780,000 a year (about 65,000 a month) | 6 salary profiles only |
How to read these numbers:
- Treat them as estimates, not averages. The two job-portal guides do not explain how their ranges were calculated. Payscale’s figure rests on just six profiles.
- Interns earn less. Necojobs puts ML internships at NPR at 10,000 to 25,000 a month and notes that some are unpaid.
- AI and ML engineer pay overlaps. Title matters less than the work. Production ML and LLM engineering tend to pay more than analysis-focused data roles.
- One ad that did state pay: a May 2026 Kathmandu listing from Dolphin Dive Technology, a US outsourcing firm, offered USD 800 to 1,000 a month for mid-level AI software engineers with 2+ years of experience Nepalijob, expired Aug 2026. Foreign-client firms often pay above the local ranges.
What affects your pay
- Experience shipping to production, not just coursework or notebooks
- Specialisation, especially LLM applications, MLOps and computer vision
- Employer type: firms serving foreign clients generally pay more than local-market companies
- Project complexity and whether you lead others
Remote international contracts
Remote work for foreign companies is paid separately, usually in US dollars, and varies too widely to fit into the ranges above. Compare offers on take-home pay after platform fees, taxes and currency conversion. Contracts are often freelance rather than employment, so they may exclude leave, provident fund and other benefits. See the remote jobs section below.
Skills Required for an AI Career in Nepal
The core skills for AI jobs in Nepal are Python, maths and statistics, data handling with SQL and Pandas, machine learning fundamentals and the ability to deploy a model behind an API. Learn them roughly in the order below. You do not need every framework; one deep-learning library learned well beats five learned badly.
| Learning stage | Skills and tools | Priority for beginners |
| 1. Foundations | Python, basic programming, linear algebra, probability, statistics | Essential |
| 2. Data handling | SQL, Pandas, NumPy, data visualisation | Essential |
| 3. Machine learning | Scikit-learn, model evaluation, feature engineering | Essential |
| 4. Advanced AI | PyTorch or TensorFlow, NLP, computer vision, LLMs and RAG | Choose one specialty |
| 5. Deployment | Git and GitHub, FastAPI or Flask, Docker, basic cloud | Learn the basics early |
| 6. Job readiness | Problem-solving, documentation, English communication, portfolio | Ongoing |
What Nepali employers emphasise in 2026: recent AI job ads in Kathmandu and Lalitpur repeatedly asked for LLM work (RAG, prompt design, fine-tuning), vector databases and MLOps practices. Senior listings, such as an AMNIL Technologies Senior AI Engineer role, added Docker, Kubernetes and cloud platforms Kumarijob, expired June 2026). If you already code, LLM application skills are the quickest way to become employable.
Do not skip communication. Many Nepali AI teams work directly with clients in the US, Europe and Australia, so clear written English and good documentation count in interviews.

How to Start an AI Career in Nepal: Step-by-Step Roadmap
To start an AI career in Nepal, learn Python, build data and machine learning foundations, complete three practical projects, publish them on GitHub and apply for internships or junior data and software roles. With 10 to 15 hours of study a week, most beginners need 9 to 18 months to reach internship level. Those with a computing degree can move faster.
- Learn Python and core maths (months 1–3). Cover variables, functions, loops and object-oriented basics. Alongside, revise linear algebra, probability and statistics at +2 and first-year university level.
- Learn to handle data (months 3–5). Practise SQL, Pandas and charts on real datasets. Nepali open data on agriculture, census or tourism makes good practice material.
- Learn machine learning fundamentals (months 5–8). Use scikit-learn for regression, classification and clustering. Learn how to split data, measure accuracy and spot overfitting.
- Pick one specialty (months 8–12). Choose LLM applications, NLP, computer vision or classical ML. Learn PyTorch or TensorFlow for that track.
- Build and publish three projects. Each one should solve a real problem, include a README and run as a demo or API. See the project ideas below.
- Prepare for internships. Polish your GitHub, write a one-page CV, and practise explaining your projects aloud in English. Join local communities and hackathons to meet engineers who refer candidates.
- Apply widely. Target AI and ML internships, plus junior data analyst, Python developer and backend roles. Moving into AI from inside a tech company is common.
- Keep learning on the job. Add MLOps, cloud deployment and evaluation skills once you are working. These move you from junior to mid-level.
Best AI Courses, Degrees and Training Options in Nepal
You can study AI in Nepal through a dedicated AI bachelor’s degree, a general computing degree, a foreign-affiliated BSc, or short courses and self-study. A degree helps with hiring filters and visa applications, but Nepali tech employers mainly judge what you can build. Many job ads accept “equivalent practical experience” in place of a specific degree.
Route 1: Formal AI degrees in Nepal
| Programme | University | Where offered | Notes |
| BTech in Artificial Intelligence | Kathmandu University | KU School of Engineering, Dhulikhel | Nepal’s first AI degree, launched for the September 2021 intake (The Himalayan Times). KU also runs an MTech in AI. |
| BTech in AI | Purbanchal University | Kantipur City College and several other affiliated colleges | Requires +2 Science or equivalent and a Purbanchal entrance exam |
| Bachelor of AI and Data Science (BAIDS) | Pokhara University | Shramik Shanti Campus, Lalitpur | Four years; first intake in 2025 with 48 seats |
| BSc (Hons) Computer Science (AI) | University of the West of England, UK | The British College, Kathmandu | UK-awarded degree taught in Nepal |
General computing degrees remain the most common route into AI jobs. These include Tribhuvan University’s BSc CSIT, BE Computer and BIT, plus computer engineering at KU, PU and Purbanchal. Add AI electives, a final-year AI project and self-study on top.
Route 2: Structured training and bootcamps
Short AI and machine learning courses are offered by training institutes in Kathmandu, usually over 2 to 6 months. Before paying, ask for the syllabus, the instructor’s industry experience and the projects you will build. Be cautious of guaranteed job placement claims you cannot verify.
Route 3: Self-directed learning
Free and low-cost online resources can take you to job-ready level if you build projects as you go. Good starting points include Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course, fast.ai’s Practical Deep Learning course, Kaggle Learn micro-courses and the Machine Learning Specialization on Coursera. Coursera offers financial aid for learners who cannot pay.

AI Jobs in Nepal vs Remote Jobs for International Companies
Nepali professionals can get remote AI jobs, but they are harder to land than local roles and usually go to people with proven experience. Most people build two or three years of experience at a Nepal-based company first, then move to remote work.
| Factor | Nepal-based AI job | Remote job for a foreign company |
| Competition | Mostly local candidates | Global candidates for the same role |
| Experience expected | Traineeships and junior roles exist | Usually mid level or above |
| Pay | Paid in NPR; ranges shown above | Usually USD; varies widely by client |
| Contract | Employment with leave and statutory benefits | Often freelance or contractor, with fewer benefits |
| Hiring process | CV, technical test, interviews | Online assessments, take-home tasks, several video interviews |
| Working hours | Nepal office hours | Often overlap with US, European or Australian time zones |
| Location eligibility | Open to Nepal residents | Check the ad: many “remote” roles exclude Nepal |
There is also a middle path. Many Kathmandu employers, such as Fusemachines and Docsumo, build AI products for clients abroad. You get international project experience while staying on a local employment contract.
Before accepting a remote contract, confirm how you will be paid, how foreign income must be declared and taxed in Nepal, and what happens if the client ends the contract early. A tax adviser can clarify your obligations.

AI Projects to Build a Portfolio in Nepal
The best portfolio projects solve a real, local problem and run as a working demo. Three finished projects with clear READMEs beat ten tutorial copies. The ideas below are suggestions to help you stand out, not skills employers require.
| Project idea | What it shows | Level |
| Nepali handwritten digit or Devanagari character recogniser | Computer vision, CNNs, data preparation | Beginner |
| Nepali news category classifier | Text classification, NLP basics | Beginner |
| Kathmandu house rent or vehicle price predictor | Regression, feature engineering, data collection | Beginner |
| Nepali-language FAQ chatbot for a college or bank | LLM APIs, RAG, vector databases, deployment | Intermediate |
| Nepali document OCR for forms or citizenship-style layouts using sample data | OCR, computer vision, document AI | Intermediate |
| Trekking or homestay recommendation system | Recommender systems, user data, APIs | Intermediate |
| Crop disease detector from leaf photos | Image classification, transfer learning | Intermediate |
Use public or synthetic data only. Never train on real citizenship documents, bank records or other personal data without permission.
For each project, publish the code on GitHub, write what problem it solves and how well it performs, and deploy a simple demo. Free hosting such as Hugging Face Spaces works well. That turns a notebook into evidence you can ship.
